Tinder 101
This How to is more than 2 years old and may be outdated.
Tinder is one of the most popular online dating apps, which helps you filter out some people, meet them and eventually date them. Their "Match. Chat. Date." slogan is basically what it's all about, plus of course, swiping. Oooh, the swiping, swipe left for a no and right for a yes, text one another and book a meet. Tinder will show you user profiles based on yours and their geolocation and a few settings you get to choose from on your own profile. So let's get to it.
In this How-to we'll show you how to get the app, install it on your iPhone, set it up and share a few tricks of using it. You can log-in with your Facebook account, but be aware that Tinder will copy your name, age, interests and six photos you're tagged in from Facebook. Yeah, we didn't want that either. Don't be alarmed, you can edit everything, remove some photos and choose new ones, write in a few lines of text about yourself and describe who you are and what you are looking for.
Download and install
Go to App Store and write in Tinder in the search field. Tap Get and wait for the app to download and install to your phone. When it’s done, tap Open.
Now you can choose between logging in with Facebook, and you can read more about this in the text above this step, and between logging in with phone number. With privacy in mind and the scares of sharing too much information right from the beginning, we chose the latter, to log in with phone number.
Log in with phone number
Now we have to write in our phone number with country code (area code), as shown in the image. For the purposes of this how-to, we chose Croatia from the drop-down menu, +385.
Write in your phone number in the requested format, for us it’s (+385) 9X XXXXXXX, and tap Continue.
Next step you’ll get a text message with the activation code, then write it in the My code is field.
If you haven’t received a text with the code, tap Resend.
By confirming the code you continue to create your Tinder account. Tap Get Started, or if you wish to Log in with Facebook and your account to withdraw all the information it needs from it, tap Log in with Facebook.
Setting up Tinder password and name
In this step, you will have to set up a Tinder password that has to contain at least one letter, one number, and eight characters. Be sure to remember your password and never share it with anyone so your account is secure and only you can access it.
Write in your password and tap Continue.
Now you get to write in your name. This name you choose to write in will appear in Tinder. Then tap Continue.
Set up your profile for the best matcha za najbolji match
Write in your birthday and then tap Continue, tap a gender, woman or a man and tap Continue.
Now you can write in the name of your College, whether you have graduated or are attending, and you can skip this step if you’d rather not state this about yourself.
And now you get to pick probably the most important part of this app, your profile picture. Tap + and add a photo you want to be shown on Tinder and confirm by tapping Done.
Tinder and what's what
First step when you enter your new app is probably a screen as shown in the image.
In the upper left part of the screen, you can find your profile and all the profile settings and appearance.
In the right part of the screen, you can find all the messages you have exchanged with other users. Note that you can exchange messages only with the users who have liked your profile and who you’ve liked back, or with the ones you’ve “matched”, to be more specific.
As soon as Tinder locates your location, it will give you a bunch of user profiles for you to swipe. If by any chance Tinder cannot locate you, check if you have your Location Services turned on.
Profile Settings
By tapping the little man icon in the upper left part of the screen, you get to your Tinder profile. Tap Settings to edit all the settings, and by tapping Edit info (About me) you can edit your profile information.
Here you can edit your username, set up a maximum distance radius in which Tinder will search for users to match with you, for example, 10 km or more. Play a little with this setting, because the bigger the radius you allow (Maximum distance), the more profiles you get to swipe from.
Here you can also pick a gender you’re interested in, to show Tinder whether you’re searching for men or women to match with, and age range that is acceptable for you, for example, 18-34.
In the Edit Info screen, you can add stuff like your job title, company, education, etc., and you can connect Snapchat and Instagram account with your Tinder profile.
In the Messages tab, you have the entire message history with all your matches and the matches list. Anyone who’s liked you and you’ve liked him back will appear here and you’ll be able to send him or her a message.
In the Feed tab, you can see all the profile activities of your matches.
Swipes, likes and top picks
As we have mentioned before, swiping to left means we’re not interested, and swiping to right means we are interested and it’s a like.
Swiping up stands for a super like.
By tapping the diamond button we enter the Top Picks, that are made of featured profiles of the day chosen for you.
You can like by using the icons below the profile as well, as shown in the image.
